Tiki Tatsu-Ya is celebrating National Mai Tai Day on Sunday, August 30, with a rum tasting session hosted by Holmes Cay. It runs from 4 PM to 6 PM upstairs in the Nest, at 1300 S. Lamar.
If you've never heard the story, the Mai Tai was first shaken by Victor 'Trader Vic' Bergeron in 1944. Legend has it a guest took a sip and exclaimed 'Maita'i roa a'e' — Tahitian for 'very good' — and the name stuck, turning the drink into the signature beverage of the Tiki scene. National Mai Tai Day marks the anniversary of that first sampling.
For this year's edition, Holmes Cay Rum has partnered with 50 bars across the country to feature a resurrected style of rum that was integral to the classic mid-century Mai Tai, with 20 of those stops in Texas. The Austin stop is an intimate session with limited seating: your ticket gets you a featured Mai Tai made with Holmes Cay rum and a seat for the tasting, with additional pours available to buy if you want to keep going.

Tickets are $20 and you have to be 21 or older. The tasting is from 4 PM to 6 PM on Sunday, August 30, upstairs in the Nest at Tiki Tatsu-Ya, 1300 S. Lamar.
