Austin-based blues and americana artist Monica Valli performs live at Hotel San Jose.
Monica Valli plays Hotel San José on Thursday, October 1, at 7 PM. She's an Austin-based blues and Americana artist and electric guitar player, and this is a solo bill—just her on the lineup.
Before she stepped out as her own front and center, Valli spent years on the road as a hired-gun lead guitarist for a string of other artists. That background comes through in her playing; she's a guitarist first, and her work pulls from a wide spread of styles. She describes her sound as a blend of grit and grace, and the reach of it goes across indie rock, folk, Americana, country, and blues. It's the kind of set that doesn't stick to one corner of the room, moving between the raw edge of the blues and the more open, melodic side of Americana.
If you're not familiar with her, that's a good place to start. The blues and Americana labels cover the core of it, but the indie rock and folk elements give it a different shape than your standard roots show. It's a local Austin act, so this is a chance to catch her playing her own material on home turf.
