The Milan Moorman Quartet plays The Elephant Room on Tuesday, July 28, starting at 9 PM. It's a jazz set led by Moorman on trumpet and flugelhorn, with Jerry Espinoza on sax. The two horns will be the front line for the night, and the quartet fills out the rest of the rhythm section.
Moorman is an Austin trumpet and flugelhorn player with a jazz pedigree that goes back a few decades. He studied in Portland, Oregon, in 1986 at Mount Hood Community College, and spent the early part of his career working cruise ship jobs before making his way to Austin. He was welcomed into the local jazz community pretty quickly from there. Over the years, he's played in both small ensembles and big bands, sharing the stage with names like Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, and Dick Shearer. These days he leads his own small group for public and private events, and this is one of those public dates.
He's joined here by Jerry Espinoza on sax, so you'll have two horns leading the way. The Elephant Room is Austin's iconic Congress Avenue basement club, which has hosted live jazz nightly. It's a spot that's been a fixture of the city's music scene for a long time, and this is one of the nights it keeps that tradition going.
