Milan Moorman Quartet

Milan Moorman leads his quartet at The Elephant Room on Tuesday, August 18, at 9 PM. Moorman plays trumpet and flugelhorn, and the set is built around those two horns—one with a brighter, more piercing edge and the other with a rounder, warmer tone. The quartet is his own small group, which he leads for public and private events.

Moorman has a serious jazz pedigree that goes back a few decades. He studied in Portland, Oregon, in 1986 at Mount Hood Community College and spent the early part of his career working cruise ship jobs before making his way to Austin. Once he arrived, he was quickly welcomed into the city's jazz community, and over the years he's played in both small ensembles and big bands. Along the way, he's shared the stage with jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, and Dick Shearer.

He describes the quartet's sound as elegant, swinging, and soulful, with classic jazz warmth and sophistication. It's a small-group format, so the trumpet and flugelhorn stay front and center throughout the night. The Elephant Room is Austin's iconic Congress Avenue basement club, which hosts live jazz nightly.
