Mike Sailors (with the Elias Haslanger Quintet)

Mike Sailors plays Toscano's on Saturday, October 10, with the Elias Haslanger Quintet. He's an Austin-based jazz trumpeter, arranger and composer originally from Charleston, South Carolina, and this is a night that puts his own work front and center.

If you've only known him as a sideman, it's worth knowing where he's been. He's played worldwide at the Blue Note in Tokyo, Sapporo and New York, as well as Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Carnegie Hall, Yoshi's and the Bowery Ballroom. He's appeared at the Tokyo Blue Note Jazz Festival, the EFG London Jazz Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival. He's worked with Bobby Sanabria, The Multiverse Orchestra, the Hot Sardines and Orrin Evans's Captain Black Big Band, and has been a featured soloist with the Austin, Cincinnati, Gulf Coast and Jacksonville Symphony Orchestras.

There's a Broadway side to his career too. He played trumpet in Beautiful - The Carole King Story, Be More Chill and The Prom, and served as Music Director for Sleep No More from 2014 to 2017. In 2019, he joined the faculty of The University of Texas Butler School of Music, where he leads the Jazz Trumpet Studio.

This show is a different gear. In 2024, he co-released his first album as a leader, Elias Haslanger Meets Mike Sailors, recorded right here in Austin. On October 10, he'll be leading the Elias Haslanger Quintet, so the set will draw from that record. It's a chance to hear him step out from the sideman role and take the lead. The show starts at 7 PM at Toscano's.
