Michael Monroe Goodman

Michael Monroe Goodman is back at The Broken Spoke on Wednesday, July 22, for another night of honky tonk. If you've been following his run this summer, you know he's a regular here: he's playing every Wednesday in July, and he'll keep it going into August, too.

Goodman is a country recording artist who plays in a honky tonk style, and the Spoke is exactly the kind of room for it. The venue is one of the city's oldest dancehalls, open since 1964, and it's still a working dancehall first and foremost. It serves homestyle meals—the chicken fried steak is the one people talk about—and hosts live bands Tuesday through Saturday. On Wednesday nights, the dancehall opens at 7:15 PM, and from 8 to 9 PM they run two-step lessons, so if you're not already comfortable on the floor, you can get a few steps in before the music really takes over.

Goodman's set starts at 9 PM in the dancehall. If you want to make a whole evening of it, there's an earlier slot: Manny Velazquez plays in the restaurant from 6 to 8 PM, and the dinner-and-show nights don't charge a cover. So you can come early for a meal and some music, hang around for the lessons, and then stay for Goodman when the dancehall kicks off.

It's a long-running residency, not a one-off. He's on the calendar for July 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, and he'll be back on Wednesday, August 5. If you miss him this week, you've got several more chances coming up. The Broken Spoke is at 3201 S. Lamar Blvd, and Goodman takes the stage at 9 PM.
