An evening of music and conversation exploring the shared musical language of the Eastern Mediterranean, with live music, discussion and a community jam session.
Roberto Riggio, Dimitris Goulimaris, and Hamid Reza Fallahi are back at RichesArt Gallery on Tuesday, August 18, for another session of the Maqam Gathering. It's a monthly series they lead together, and this one focuses on the shared musical language of the Eastern Mediterranean, with a particular look at the dialogue between Arabic and Persian traditions.
If you've never been, the evening follows a set format: live music, conversation, and then a community jam session. That last part is the real draw—attendees are invited to bring their own instruments and voices and play along, with time to socialize with other learners. It's as much about playing as it is about listening.
The series is presented in partnership with Arus Mundi Artists International and sponsored by the Austin Live Music Fund. The three of them—Riggio, Goulimaris, and Fallahi—guide the whole thing, and the focus on the Arabic and Persian traditions runs through each session. It's a recurring thing, so if you miss this one, there's another coming next month.
