Live music performance by Manny Velazquez at the historic Broken Spoke honky-tonk.
Manny Velazquez plays the restaurant at Broken Spoke on Wednesday, September 30, from 6 PM to 8 PM. It's part of his regular Wednesday slot, the early set that runs before the dancehall takes over for the night.
If you've never been, the Spoke is a Texas Historical Site, one of the city's last true dancehalls. It opened in 1964, when James M. White started it as a live-music honky-tonk, and it's still running as one. The place serves homestyle meals—the chicken fried steak is the one people talk about—and runs two-step and swing lessons Wednesday through Saturday, 8 PM to 9 PM, with dance instructor Terri White. The venue recently went through a round of renovations funded in part by the City of Austin, Visit Austin, and a Heritage Grant, which brought in a new electrical system, a new roof, fresh paint, and a new patio roof and fence.

Velazquez is a regular here, playing every Wednesday in the restaurant before the dancehall night takes over. It's a good way to catch him in a smaller setting before the room fills up for the dancing. There's no cover; the bands play for tips. He'll be at 3201 S. Lamar Blvd from 6 PM to 8 PM.
