Concert by the soul and roots music artist Lindsay Beaver at C-Boy's Heart & Soul in Austin.
Lindsay Beaver plays C-Boy's Heart & Soul on Sunday, May 24, starting at 3:30 PM. It's a solo bill, so she's the only name on the marquee for the afternoon.
Beaver hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia, but she calls Austin home now. At 33, she's described as an old soul, and the description holds up when you look at how she's put together: she's a classically trained vocalist and a jazz-trained drummer with a deep love and knowledge of roots music. That background lets her pull from a wide range of sounds, from blues, jazz, and R&B ballads to raucous rock 'n' roll, and she can move between them in a single set.
Coming from that mix of classical and jazz training, she's as comfortable with a slow ballad as she is with something that kicks up a bit of dust. The roots music she works in—blues, jazz, R&B, and rock 'n' roll—all share a common thread of melody and rhythm, and she has the technical grounding to lean into any of them. Whether she's singing a ballad or playing something more uptempo, it's that same foundation of roots music running through it.
