Free outdoor drop-in summer concert series featuring the cumbia projects Como Las Movies and Los Desechos, part of the Levitt VIBE Austin Music Series.
Como Las Movies and Los Desechos play the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, July 30, as part of the Levitt VIBE Austin Music Series. Both acts come from Austin's cumbia scene, and the night is a double bill on the H-E-B Stage.
Como Las Movies is the indie-cumbia-pop project of Nelson Valente Aguilar, an Austinite from McAllen, Texas, who writes the songs. His sound pulls from pan-Latin and contemporary influences, and NPR once described it as "a colorful, cultural soundscape" that reimagines cumbia rhythms. Los Desechos are also cumbia players, and they've shared the stage with Sonora Dinamita, Sonido Gallo Negro, El Combo Oscuro, and Money Chicha at SXSW, Viva Big Bend, and Cumbiadelica Fest. They're the resident house band for Hotel Vegas Cumbia Night.
The show is part of The Drop-In, a free outdoor concert series powered by KUTX 98.9. It's one of the Thursday night slots in the Levitt VIBE series, which has brought 23 bands to the city across the summer. The series now offers a 'Pay What You Want' option to support free local music, so you can contribute if you're able.
