Lee Mathis & the Brutally Handsome play the Broken Spoke on Friday, September 25, starting at 6 PM. They're an outlaw, traditional and swing country band from Longview, Texas, and they describe their live shows as high-energy, drawing on the outlaw country of the 1970s, '80s and '90s alongside their own original material.
If you've followed them for a while, you'll recognize the albums The Hard Stuff (2017) and Vices (2019). Since then, they've put out a steady string of singles: "Pieces of Me," "Who Knew," "Leavin' Me's Leavin' Me Lonely" and "Drinkin' Again" in 2024, "All I Need Is You" in 2025, and the newest song, "Funeral Pyre," this year. You'll likely hear a mix of those newer tracks and the older stuff they've built their sound around.
Their run at the ETX Music Awards was particularly strong. Lee Mathis took Song of the Year in 2018 for "Something About the Rain," and in 2019 the group won Country Band of the Year while Lee was named Male Vocalist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. The current lineup consists of Lee Mathis, Jeffrey Odom, Rio Wallace and Byron Owens.
