Solo exhibition by Austin-based artist Lance Myers exploring youth and the melancholy of its passing through lush blooms and figures rendered in a suspended state of perfection.
Lance Myers returns to Wally Workman Gallery with As We Unmagic the Self, his second solo show with the gallery. It opens Saturday, August 1, and runs through September 6.
In this body of work, Myers looks at youth and the melancholy of its passing. His lush blooms and figures are rendered in a suspended state of perfection, while creatures of decay — beetles, pill bugs, the slow agents of entropy — crawl quietly in the foreground. The tension between those two forces is at once poignant and inevitable.
That sense of movement carries over from Myers' other work: he's currently the lead animator at Stoic Studio here in Austin, where his command of movement and the living figure informs the quiet dynamism of his painting. He also teaches 2D animation at the University of Texas at Austin, so he's working with the moving image both in the studio and in the classroom.

Wally Workman Gallery has been around since 1980 and is housed in a 120-year-old historic home. It specializes in emerging and collected talent and has spent decades moving local artists onto the national stage. The opening reception is Saturday, August 1, from 6 to 8 PM, and the show stays up through September 6.
