Celebration of founder Lady Bird Johnson with family activities, seedball spreading, and guided birding walks.
Lady Bird Day is coming to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center on Sunday, October 18, from 9 AM to 1 PM. It's a morning dedicated to the center's founder, Lady Bird Johnson, and it's built around the kind of outdoor activities that make the place what it is. There will be family activities, seedball spreading, and guided birding walks throughout the morning.
If you've never spent much time there, the center is a botanical garden dedicated to the conservation of native plants. It's open to the public year-round and sits about ten miles from downtown Austin. Lady Bird Johnson and Helen Hayes planted it in 1982, and it became part of The University of Texas at Austin in 2006. Since then, it's gained a national reputation for its work in plant conservation, ecosystem design, native plants, sustainable landscapes, and education.
The campus brings together several different areas: the native plant gardens, the Texas Arboretum, and the Luci and Ian Family Garden. On a day like this, you can see them all in one go, with the guided birding walks taking you through the grounds and the seedball spreading putting you directly into the conservation work the center does. It's a good way to spend a Sunday morning if you're into native plants and local birds.
