Exhibition of Kara Timmon's paintings exploring movement through density, on view through August 2.
Kara Timmon opens a new exhibition, Where Light Enters, at ArtUs Co on Saturday, July 25, in Austin. The show runs through August 2, so you've got a little over a week to catch it if you can't make it on opening day.
The paintings in the show center on what Timmon describes as moving through density—emotional, societal, ecological, and psychic. It's a broad way of putting it, but the work itself is more concrete: human, animal, and botanical forms merge and dissolve within layered environments that suggest both pressure and spaciousness. The imagery leans surreal and mythic, and Timmon says the work considers how instinct, tenderness, and a connection to the natural world can navigate us through an increasingly heavy and fragmented reality.
If you're into art that doesn't hand you the answer right away, this is one to spend some time with. The way the figures blend into their surroundings—human into plant, animal into environment—is a good place to start, and the tension between that feeling of being pressed in and the openness around it is what the whole thing is built on. It's the kind of show that asks you to sit with it for a bit rather than just glancing and moving on.
