Closing art party for the 'Sun-Drenched' collective exhibition featuring works by El Baker, Landry McMeans, and Kandice Pierce.
The Cathedral is wrapping up its group show Sun-Drenched with a closing party on Friday, July 31, from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. It's the final chance to see the exhibition before it comes down, and the party brings together the three landscape artists it features: El Baker, Landry McMeans, and Kandice Pierce.
Each of them approaches the landscape from a different angle. McMeans works in large-scale stencil paintings of the American Southwest, those wide-open vistas that define the region. Baker builds layered, evocative depictions of the Texas landscape, and Pierce focuses on the emotional resonance of place. Together they make Sun-Drenched a show about the land we live in and the different ways we see it.
Knowing the space helps put the show in context. The Cathedral is a Latina-owned art gallery, event space, and boutique workspace housed in a restored 1930s church in East Austin. It's the home of atxGALS, the city's largest collective of women and nonbinary artists, and it's been recognized as one of the top three places to see art in Austin. The gallery also uses a commission structure designed to ensure a larger portion of proceeds goes directly to the artists.
