Jon Blondell returns to reclaim his throne on stage in the basement at The Elephant Room, blending traditional jazz with blues, funk, soul, swing and New Orleans influences.
Jon Blondell is back on bass at The Elephant Room on Monday, August 3, starting at 6 PM. He'll be leading the night with a rotating cast of friends, and if you can't make this one, he does it again the following Monday, August 10, at the same time.
Blondell has been a fixture of the Austin music scene for decades, one of the city's most versatile jazz musicians. He's known as both a trombonist and an electric bassist, and his playing pulls from a wide range: traditional jazz mixed with blues, funk, soul, swing, and New Orleans influences. The sets are usually high-energy and lean into his sense of humor as much as his virtuosity. He's also played far beyond the jazz world, with artists as different as Willie Nelson and Sublime.
When he's not playing with others, he fronts BLONDELL !, which he bills as a 'Fireball Front Man' bringing a repertoire of songs from across the musical spectrum to the jazz stage. The Elephant Room celebrates him every month, and the venue sums up his presence on the stand: 'You never know quite what to expect when Jon Blondell is on bass, but you know it's gonna be good!'
