Jon Blondell is back at The Elephant Room on Monday, August 10, playing with a rotating cast of friends. It's a return to the basement for one of Austin's most versatile jazz musicians, and if you've seen him around town, you know that's a broad description. He's a trombonist and an electric bassist, and he's been a fixture of the city's music scene for decades.
His playing pulls from a wide spread of traditions—jazz, blues, funk, soul, swing, and New Orleans influences—and he's known for bringing a good deal of energy and humor to the stage. He's worked across the board, too, playing with artists as different as Willie Nelson and Sublime, so he's comfortable in a lot of different rooms. He's a regular at The Elephant Room, and there's a particular kind of unpredictability to his sets there: when he's on bass, you never quite know where the night is headed, but it always lands in a good place.
