Concert by jazz saxophonist Joel Frahm as part of the ATX Jazz Fest, a gathering of jazz talent in Austin.
Joel Frahm plays the Moody Amphitheater on Saturday, April 3, as part of the ATX Jazz Fest, which runs from April 2 to 4. Frahm is the sole feature of the bill that day, so it's a full set from the saxophonist rather than a shared stage. The festival is put on by ATX Chamber Music and Jazz, and they've built it around a pretty heavy-hitting roster: Grammy winners, MacArthur Fellows, and NEA Jazz Masters. The organizers are calling it the most concentrated assembly of jazz talent ever staged in Texas.
The festival opens on Friday with an exclusive 300-seat concert at Assembly Hall, a converted East Austin room with polished concrete, 16-foot ceilings, and exposed steel beams. From there, the action moves to the main stage at the Moody Amphitheater on Saturday and Sunday, before returning to Assembly Hall for VIP late-night jam sessions and small-group sets. Frahm's performance falls on that Saturday, right in the middle of the weekend.
There's a community side to the whole thing that's worth knowing. ATX Chamber Music and Jazz donates 10% of the festival's seating to children and their chaperones, and the artists play for free in schools, youth clubs, and retirement homes. It's a nice touch that keeps the music from staying locked inside the venues.
