Joe Rothenberg in conversation with Phil Machi for Ask the Cartoonist: A Joetatochips Live Event, with a book signing.
Joe Rothenberg is coming to BookPeople on Saturday, August 22, for a conversation about his latest work. He'll be sitting down with moderator Phil Machi as part of Ask the Cartoonist: A Joetatochips Live Event, which runs about 45 to 60 minutes and is followed by a signing line. The whole thing takes place on the second floor of BookPeople at 603 North Lamar Boulevard.
Rothenberg is an Austin-based animator, illustrator, author, and cartoonist who's been around the local scene for a while. He's the name behind Castle Winkeldorf, Joetatochips, and Tall Problems, and he's been a diehard cartoon fan since he was a kid. He published his debut book, The Forgotten Ones: Prehistoric Creatures You Can't Prove Didn't Exist, in 2025, and followed it up with his first graphic novel, You Call Yourself a Dragon?!, in early 2026. He describes his comics as silly, smart, and full of laughs for all ages, and when he isn't drawing, he's a doting husband and proud father of two living in central Texas.
Moderating the conversation is Phil Machi, an independent animator, author, podcast host, and filmmaker whose long-running comic strip Retail Sunshine is currently being adapted into a hand-drawn animated short. The two are both active in the local animation and comics community, so it should be a natural fit.
