Vibraphonists Joe Locke and Warren Wolf unite two generations of jazz artistry in a collaboration at the ATX Jazz Fest.
Joe Locke and Warren Wolf are playing together at the Moody Amphitheater on Sunday, April 4, 2027. The set is called Vibing, and it brings two generations of jazz vibraphonists onto the same stage. If you've followed either of them, you know the instrument—the vibraphone is that metallic, ringing percussion that sits somewhere between a piano and a xylophone, and having two of them playing at once is a rare thing to see live.
The show is part of the ATX Jazz Fest, which ATX Chamber Music and Jazz launched as a way to bring a high concentration of jazz talent to the city. The festival gathers Grammy winners, MacArthur Fellows, and NEA Jazz Masters, and the organizers describe it as the most concentrated gathering of jazz talent ever assembled in Texas. It opens on a Friday night with an exclusive 300-seat concert at Assembly Hall, a converted East Austin venue with polished concrete floors, 16-foot ceilings, and exposed steel beams. Saturday and Sunday move to the Moody Amphitheater main stage, and VIP late-night sessions return to Assembly Hall for jam sessions and small-group sets.
Locke and Wolf represent two different eras of the instrument, and Vibing is the collaboration that puts them in the same room. The festival itself is run by ATX Chamber Music and Jazz, which keeps a focus on accessibility: 10% of its seating is donated to children and their chaperones, and its artists regularly perform free of charge in schools, youth clubs, and retirement homes.
