Bleed American came out in 2001 and shifted the band toward a poppier sound, and it held the No. 5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with "The Middle." They followed it up with Futures in 2004, which hit No. 6 and gave them the No. 1 single "Pain," then kept going with Chase This Light in 2007 and Invented in 2010.

That run takes them back to where they started. Jimmy Eat World formed in 1993 as a punk trio made up of childhood friends Jim Adkins and Zach Lind. By the time Bleed American arrived, they'd moved away from those early punk roots and into the melodic, hooky sound that became their signature. In 2013, they released Damage, their eighth studio album, which they describe as a shift toward a more sophisticated sound and a more mature lyrical tone.
