MacArthur Fellow Jason Moran reimagines the music of Duke Ellington in a solo ascent of Mount Ellington, part of the ATX Chamber Music and Jazz season.
Jason Moran plays the Moody Amphitheater on Sunday, April 4, 2027, with a solo set he calls The Music of Duke Ellington: My Heart Sings. It's a solo performance, just Moran and the piano, and he's spending the night reimagining Ellington's workβhe describes the whole thing as a solo ascent of Mount Ellington.
Moran is a MacArthur Fellow who has been a presence on the jazz scene since the late 1990s, and Rolling Stone once called him "the most provocative thinker in current jazz." That's a good way to frame this, too: he's not just running through the Ellington songbook as it is, but taking it apart and putting it back together in his own way. If you're familiar with Ellington, you'll recognize the melodies, but you'll hear them through Moran's particular lens.
