Film festival bringing the best of South Asian and Iranian cinema to Austin with screenings, Q&As, mixers and filmmaker meet-and-greets.
The Indie Meme Film Festival returns to AFS Cinema from April 21 to 25, 2027, bringing a selection of South Asian and Iranian cinema to Austin. It's a five-day run, so you've got a few different windows to catch what you're after rather than having to cram everything into one night.
The festival centers on screenings, but there's more to it than just sitting in the dark. They've got Q&A sessions where you can hear from the people behind the films, mixers for meeting other moviegoers, and filmmaker meet-and-greets that put you in the same room as the directors and crews. If you're into the conversation side of cinema as much as the watching, those are the parts to keep an eye on.
Indie Meme has been doing this since 2013, focusing on bold, authentic storytelling from South Asia and the South Asian diaspora. The festival brings that work to Austin, and it also points toward an Indie Meme Lit programme, so the cinema is part of a broader interest in the region's writing and storytelling.
