Concert by the Austin band Improvement Movement featuring special guest Jalen Reyes, a versatile musician from Savannah, Georgia.
Improvement Movement plays Brushy Street Commons on Saturday, October 24, with Jalen Reyes leading the way. The show is presented by Resound Presents.
Jalen Reyes is one of Savannah, Georgia's most in-demand musicians, known for working across Americana, country, honky-tonk, jazz, and rock. He's spent much of his career as a powerhouse drummer and session man for major radio acts, and this is his own project. He teamed up with guitarist Dylan Lee, of Washed Out, to write and record his debut album, Jalen's Magic Stew, produced by Drew Vandenberg, who also worked with Faye Webster. The record is a lush country and soul portrait of Savannah, filled with sax, string arrangements, church bells, and Bible verses, sounding equal parts Bill Withers and The Band. This past July, he released Lost in Time, a soulful, genre-blending piece that dives deeper into jazz and experimental territories.
The live band rounds out that sound with Susanna Kennedy on fiddle and acoustic guitar, Dylan Puckett on bass, and multi-instrumentalist Spencer Garland on keys, flute, and saxophone. Vocals are shared across the group, so the songs aren't just centered on one voice. Between the fiddle, the brass, and the shared singing, there's a lot of ground covered in a single set.
