Sitar maestro Niladri Kumaar performs music from his collaboration with Ustad Zakir Hussain, reimagined through his own interpretations.
Niladri Kumaar plays The Austin Stone Northwest on Friday, October 9, at 7:30 PM. He's a sitar and zitar player, and this particular show is built around his work with the late Ustad Zakir Hussain.
Kumaar and Hussain collaborated for years, and their partnership came together in The Space Between the Notes, a live recording captured in Mumbai. That recording is the starting point for this performance: Kumaar is revisiting music from their final collaboration and reimagining it through his own interpretations and original compositions. He'll be bringing both his sitar and his zitar to the stage, so you'll hear both instruments throughout the set.
He isn't playing alone. Joining him are Satyajit Talwalkar on tabla, Agnelo Fernandes on keys, and Sambit Chatterjee on drums. With a full band behind him, the music moves beyond a solo recital into a larger ensemble sound. Kumaar is known as one of the more innovative voices in Indian classical music today, and he describes this performance as a way of honoring Hussain, his friend and mentor, while carrying forward a centuries-old musical tradition.
