Texas premiere of the award-winning play House of India, a dramedy about family, tradition and identity, presented by Leela - An Indian Community Theatre.
Leela - An Indian Community Theatre is bringing House of India to the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center on Sunday, November 15, for its Texas premiere. It's a dramedy by Deepak Kumar, and it's the first time the play has been staged in the state.
The story centers on Ananya, who runs House of India, the last remaining restaurant in a once-flourishing Asian strip mall outside Cleveland. She's holding on to the place in memory of her late husband, but the pressure to change is coming from all sides: her finances, her children, and Jacob, a Thai-American entrepreneur and current cook who wants to turn the restaurant into a nationwide fast-casual Indo-fusion franchise. At its heart, the play is about South Indian food, familial expectations, and what makes a house a home.
This isn't a brand-new script. House of India had its world premiere at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in 2025, and Leela has a history with itβthe company staged a reading of the work two years ago in collaboration with City Theatre. They say that Old Globe premiere is what finally inspired them to bring the full production to Texas. The show is in English and is suitable for children 10 and up.
