Horne/Clemons

Jonathan Horne and Cat Clemons are playing together at Monks Jazz Club on Sunday, August 9, with Sam Pankey on bass and Jeffrey Olson on drums. It's billed as a live-taping and listening-room concert, which tells you exactly how the night is set up: the music is being recorded, and the room is meant for listening rather than talking over the set.

Both Horne and Clemons have spent years working across different circles here in town. Horne is a self-taught guitarist who's been based in Austin for two decades, and his resume reads like a map of the city's more adventurous corners. He currently plays with the Young Mothers, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten's Knarr, Water Damage, Thor and Friends, Heavy Meddo, and his Norway-based rock band Horne. He's also worked with Glenn Branca, Joe McPhee, Rob Mazurek, Jaimie Branch, and White Denim. Clemons is a guitarist, bassist, composer, and educator who's been a central figure in the Austin scene for the last 15 years. He's performed and recorded with Wild Child, White Denim, Sir Woman, and Hot Texas Swing Band, and he leads the genre-defying project The Cat Clemons Corporation.

Putting them together on one stage brings two guitarists who both know how to move between styles, backed by Pankey and Olson to hold down the rhythm section. With the live taping in the works, the whole thing is being captured as it happens.

Monks itself started as a pop-up listening room and has since grown into a state-of-the-art audio and video recording studio and event space in East Austin, where they run a curated series of the region's best improvisational jazz. The show is on Sunday, August 9, at 310 E. Saint Elmo Unit B in Austin South. Doors open at 7 PM, and the music starts at 7:30 PM.
