Screening of the film His House followed by the short film The Evangelist by J. Manzo, with a Q&A session between Chinwe Okorie and J. Manzo.
Hyperreal Film Club is screening His House on Tuesday, September 8, at its East Austin theater. The night is part of Parallel Lens, a series that pairs Austin-based filmmakers with creators from around the world to see how they converse when presented side by side. The main feature, His House, is by Black British director Remi Weekes. It follows a South Sudanese couple granted asylum in England whose new home will not let their past stay buried.
After the feature, the club will screen The Evangelist, a short film by Mexican filmmaker J. Manzo. It's about a man fleeing a lynching who is sheltered by a woman convinced he is the literal answer to her prayers. The two films share a focus on displacement and the weight of what people carry with them when they flee, and the pairing is exactly what Parallel Lens is about: putting two different voices in the same room to see where they meet.
The night doesn't end with the credits. There's a Q&A following the films with J. Manzo and Nigerian-born filmmaker Chinwe Okorie. Okorie is currently heading into production on her latest short, Help Is on the Way, so she'll be coming to the conversation as a filmmaker in the middle of her own project. It's a chance to hear Manzo talk through his short and to see how Okorie's perspective fits in.
