Concert featuring Helado Negro and Reyna Tropical at Mohawk Austin.
Reyna Tropical plays Mohawk on Friday, November 13, as part of a double bill called Helado Tropical, which brings them together with Helado Negro. It's an outdoor show at Mohawk's 912 Red River St. spot, and the two acts share a name that plays on the same tropical theme.
Reyna Tropical started in 2016 as a duo between Fabi Reyna and Nectali 'Sumohair' Diaz, who met during a workshop series for emerging musicians. At the time, Reyna was in the middle of founding She Shreds, the world's first magazine dedicated to women and nonbinary guitarists. Their self-titled EP came out in January 2018, followed by Sol y Lluvia in 2019, which they recorded during an extended stay in Colombia.
Their debut full-length album, Malegría, draws on Congolese, Peruvian, and Colombian rhythms and the legacy of artists like Chavela Vargas. The title Malegría comes from a 1998 Manu Chao song. Between the two EPs and the full-length, the project has moved from a self-titled introduction through the Colombian-recorded Sol y Lluvia to the wider rhythmic reach of Malegría.
