H-E-B Free First Sunday: Native American Culture

The Bullock Texas State History Museum is opening its galleries for free on Sunday, August 2, as part of its H-E-B Free First Sunday program. This month's focus is Native American culture, with the museum's usual admission waived for the day. The day is built around the stories of Native Americans in Texas, both past and present, and it's sponsored by H-E-B.

Most of the action happens in the Grand Lobby and the Bob Bullock Atrium, where several groups will be set up. The Central Texas Cherokee Township will be there sharing Cherokee language and culture, and the Chickasaw of Central Texas and the Indigenous Cultures Institute will have hands-on activities running. If you're bringing kids, the Austin Public Library is hosting a Native American storytime and craft at 10:30 AM and 11:30 AM.

Beyond the activities, the museum's galleries are open to everyone for free all day, so you can walk through the permanent exhibits and see the broader history of the state. The themed family activities run from 10 AM to 2 PM, while the museum itself stays open until 5 PM. For those who need a quieter start, there's a low-sensory Sensory Hour before the museum opens to the general public.
