A family-friendly community block party with healthy snacks, yoga, live music, STEM activities and a costume contest.
Austin Parks and Recreation and H-E-B are teaming up for the H-E-B Banana Block Party on Saturday, July 25, at the Virginia L. Brown Recreation Center. It's a Saturday morning community social built around handing out healthy snacks and fresh fruit to youth and families, and it's free to attend.
The whole thing comes from the city's work to tackle food insecurity and open up more nutritious options in the community, and the morning rounds out the food with crafts and a social atmosphere for all ages. It also ties in with Mayor Kirk Watson's Generation ATX movement, and local partners like Yoga ATX, Juiceland and Good Pops have been involved. The food is the starting point, but the rest of the morning fills in with things to do: yoga, live music, STEM activities and a costume contest. If you're bringing kids, there's plenty for them to get into, and the social side makes it easy to hang out with neighbors while the little ones are occupied.
