Kaan S. Barin brings his video art exhibition Hear Me Roar to dadaLab on Saturday, September 26, from 6 PM to 11 PM. The show is built around the kind of work Barin has spent years on: candid photographs and videos that try to get at the inner spirit of the people he meets. This particular collection pulls from several years of filming and puts it all on a large scale in a darkened room.
The format is something you'll recognize from your phone, but shifted. The videos are shot vertically in story format, with spoken dialogue, and they run continuously across a large wall. You experience them individually with headphones, which cuts out the room and lets you focus entirely on the visuals and the audio. The imagery centers on candid encounters with people, places, and communities that often go overlooked or sit outside conventional social spaces, moving through fragments of real life to put observation, empathy, and human connection at the fore.

Toward the end of the evening, the exhibition is rounded off with a short live performance by a musician whose voice Barin discovered and admired while filming on the street. Non-alcoholic cocktails and light canapé snacks are served throughout the night, and entry is limited to over-21s with a valid government-issued photo ID. The show runs from 6 PM to 11 PM at dadaLab, 2008 Alexander Avenue, and admission is free.
