Halloween with The Jesus and Mary Chain

The Jesus and Mary Chain play The Far Out Lounge & Stage on Saturday, October 31, as part of a Halloween bill. The Scottish alternative rock pioneers built their name on a blend of noisy shoegaze and melodic pop, and they're expected to lean into that signature sound here: feedback-drenched guitars and understated vocals. The set should mix newer material with the songs that made them staples of independent music.

They aren't the only ones on the bill. Protomartyr, Holy Wave, DAIISTAR, Blushing, and Commercial Breaks all open for them, with DJ Tropicana Joe keeping things moving. It's a full lineup for a single night, so you'll have plenty to hear before the headliner takes the stage.

The venue is The Far Out Lounge & Stage, at 8504 South Congress. It opened in the spring of 2019 and holds a good deal of old Austin history: the building housed Beverly's biker bar in the 1980s and served as a hideout for The Newton Boys in the 1920s, and it incorporates part of the original bar that opened in 1808. Willie Nelson has shot movies and music videos there, Janis Joplin performed there once, and it was voted Best New Venue at the Austin Music Awards 2020.

It's an all-ages show, so you can bring whoever you want. The music runs from 5 PM to midnight, and the whole thing falls on Halloween night.
