A Halloween-themed children's concert featuring Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf' with narration and props, designed for families with young children.
The Austin Symphony Orchestra is bringing its Halloween Children's Concert to Long Center's Dell Hall on Sunday, October 18, at 3 PM. It's built around Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, a tale for narrator and orchestra that the orchestra turns into a live story: a brave boy ventures beyond the garden gate, meets a mysterious wolf, and joins his animal friends in a daring plan to capture it. Each character is played by a different instrument, so kids can see the orchestra at work as well as hear it. The narrator works a trunk of props and custom-made masks built by Alfonso Iduñate specifically for this presentation.
That's the main event, but the afternoon pairs it with a few other pieces. You'll hear Saint-Saëns' Danse macabre, which fits the spooky theme, and John Powell's How to Train Your Dragon Suite for something a bit more modern. The whole thing is conducted by Peter Bay, with Liz Zimmerman narrating Peter and the Wolf.
It's billed for ages four and up, and families are encouraged to show up in their favorite costumes. There are pre-concert activities offered, so you can arrive a bit early and let the kids get settled before the music starts. The concert is sponsored by Texas Children's Pediatrics, the Tournament of Champions H-E-B Charitable Trust, and the Women's Symphony League of Austin.
