Gospel Brunch

Stubb's runs its gospel brunch every Sunday, and the formula hasn't changed since it started: indulgent Southern food set to live gospel music. It's a full buffet and a live set, all under one roof. The venue is at 801 Red River St. in the Red River music district, and the brunch hours run from 10:30 AM to 9 PM.

There's a bit of history behind the name. Stubb's traces back to 1968, when Korean War veteran Christopher B. Stubblefield turned his passion for smoking brisket into a popular Lubbock BBQ stop. Back then, touring country and blues acts would stop in for supper in exchange for playing. He closed that shop in 1985 and moved to Austin, where Stubb's opened in 1996. Since then, the stage has hosted the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Metallica, and Bob Dylan.

The gospel brunch itself came from co-founders Eddy Patterson and John Scott, who grew up eating at Stubblefield's and were inspired by a New York gospel brunch to bring the tradition to Austin. They've kept it simple ever since: Southern food and uplifting gospel music, with the music playing while you eat. It's a long window, too—brunch hours run from 10:30 AM all the way to 9 PM, so you can drop in whenever you're ready for it.

It's $25 for the full buffet and the gospel music, and it runs every Sunday at Stubb's BBQ, 801 Red River St., Austin, TX 76164.
