Goodfellas

The State Theatre is screening Goodfellas on Sunday, August 2, as part of the Paramount Summer Classic Film Series. It's the 1990 mobster classic directed by Martin Scorsese, and it's playing in DCP, so it'll be a clean, digital print on the big screen. The movie runs 145 minutes in color.

If you've seen it, you know the story: a young man grows up in an Italian-American neighborhood and spends his life climbing the ranks of the Mafia. It's Scorsese at his most energetic, and the cast is one of the best put together in the genre. Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci lead the way, with Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino rounding out the ensemble. It's a movie that works as well on a second or third viewing as it does the first, and seeing it in a theater is a different experience than catching it on a TV screen at home.

The State Theatre is part of the Paramount and Stateside Theatres, which operate under the Austin Theatre Alliance, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Right next door is the Paramount Theatre, which has stood on Congress Avenue in downtown Austin for over 100 years. Built in 1915, it's the city's oldest surviving theatre and a City and State Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's one of the few remaining 'hemp houses' in the country, and it's where Austin's red-carpet film premieres happen, as well as a home for SXSW and the Austin Film Festival. The Paramount also hosts the Moontower Comedy Festival.

Tickets are $3, and the screening is on Sunday, August 2, at The State Theatre.
