Exhibition opening of a 10-artist group show exploring the nature of luck, with rug tufting, lotería, and tarot-inspired works, featuring complimentary cocktails.
SAGE Studio opens Good Fortune on Friday, September 11, a group exhibition featuring ten artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The show is co-curated with artist Rebecca Marino, who spent the last several months sharing the art of rug tufting with SAGE's Studio Artists, and the work is framed as a celebration of luck, chance, and magic. The opening reception runs from 7 PM to 9 PM.
That tufting is a good place to start, because it's a tactile, textural medium that fits the theme. The show pulls in a few different threads around the idea of fortune: rug tufting, lotería, and tarot-inspired works. Lotería is the traditional Mexican game of chance, and tarot is all about reading the cards to see what's coming, so both sit right in that space between luck and fate. When you put them alongside the tufted pieces, you get a mix of soft textures and graphic, card-like imagery, all circling back to the same question of how much we can leave to chance.
It's a group show, so you'll see ten different artists interpreting the theme in their own way rather than one single vision. The tufting, in particular, comes from the time Marino spent working with the Studio Artists, so a good part of what's on the wall is the result of that shared process. The whole thing is supported in part by the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
