Screening of the 1987 French animated film Gandahar, directed by René Laloux, at AFS Cinema.
AFS Cinema is screening Gandahar over the next week, the final masterpiece from French animation director René Laloux. It's a psychedelic space opera set in a utopian civilization on the brink of destruction, under siege by an army of Men of Metal. The film runs 83 minutes, in French with English subtitles, and has been restored in its original cut in 4K. It's described as a surreal eruption of violence and imagery.
Two big names are behind the look and sound. The score is by Academy Award winner Gabriel Yared, who also did Betty Blue, and the designs are by the influential French comic artist Caza. The film originally came out in 1987, and this restoration brings it back in its original cut.
AFS Cinema is Austin's only nonprofit art house theater, and it programs new releases alongside a repertory screen devoted to film culture and history—international cinema movements, director retrospectives, restorations, and classics, with Texas filmmakers frequently on screen. The cinema offers closed captioning devices on select films and enhanced audio headphones for all screenings, plus a full bar with rotating draft beers, local and imported wines, and craft cocktails.
