Concert by Nashville-based Americana songwriter and performer Gabe Lee at The Saxon Pub.
Gabe Lee plays The Saxon Pub on Wednesday, October 14, starting at 7 PM. He's a Nashville-based songwriter and performer in the Americana scene, and this is a headlining date.
If you haven't come across his work, the best place to start is with the writing. Lee is known for songs that subtly detail the intricacies of a situation, usually set to slow-moving tempos and centered on characters wrestling with internal and external struggles. It's the kind of songwriting that asks you to lean in and listen to the lyrics rather than just the melody. The music sits across country, Americana, and folk, and the focus stays on the song itself.
There's a bit of a story behind the voice, too. Lee was raised by parents who immigrated from Taiwan in the early 1980s, and he grew up in Nashville surrounded by music, drawing on classic rock and contemporary sounds alike. He's one of only a few songwriters of Asian descent in Nashville's Americana scene, and that perspective comes through in the way he observes the people and situations he writes about.

Critics have been pretty specific about what they like. Raised Rowdy described his songs as something that "could be torn from the pages of a formal literary work," and Saving Country Music suggested he might struggle to find another collection of ten songs so well-composed with wit, insight, and soul. If you're into Americana that leans more toward the storytelling side than the honky-tonk side, that's a good indication of where he lands.
The show is at The Saxon Pub, 1320 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704, on Wednesday, October 14, at 7 PM.
