Semifinals of the comedy competition to crown the next Funniest Person in Austin, with stand-up comics performing live.
Cap City Comedy Club hosts the semifinal round of the Funniest Person in Austin competition on Tuesday, August 18, at 7:30 PM. It's a long-running local tradition that starts with more than 250 aspiring comics fighting for the title and a $3,500 prize. The preliminary round is decided by audience vote, and the semifinals bring the remaining contenders back to the stage to keep going.
Eleven comics are on the bill for this round: Michael Dennis, Heather Keith, Galina Rivina, Gretchen Dietz, Xavier Cardona, Monique Jones, Ernest Evans Sr., Holly Hart, Cameron Illig, Brandon Heiser, and Evan Lopez. Every one of them has to perform original material only, so you're hearing what they're actually writing, not a set of polished club hits. The competition also has a long history of democratic honors: every year Austin elects a President of Potshots, a Dictator of Dick Jokes, a Queen of Quips, a Prince of Prank, a Minister of Merriment, a Lord of Laughs, and a King of Komedy to represent the spirit of the city.

Cap City is the competition's home, a contemporary room that brings stadium-sized talent to an intimate setting. Shows here average an hour and forty minutes, and it's a non-smoking facility that serves food and craft beers. If you're planning your night, keep in mind that the balcony section of the main room isn't wheelchair accessible. The show starts at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, August 18, at 11506 Century Oaks Ste. B-100 in Austin North.
