Semifinal round of the stand-up comedy competition to crown the next Funniest Person in Austin, featuring original material from aspiring comics.
The Funniest Person in Austin competition hits its semifinal round at Cap City Comedy Club on Tuesday, September 8, at 7:30 PM. It's the 35th edition of the contest, which has become a regular fixture for the city's comedy scene. More than 250 aspiring comics compete over about six weeks, and the only rule is that they have to use their own original material. The title comes with a $3,500 prize.
The competition is structured in stages: preliminary rounds run on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays, followed by a semifinal week, and then a final round that crowns the winner. This particular show is part of that semifinal stretch, so the field has already been narrowed down from the hundreds who started in the prelims. Every comic on stage has to stand on their own writing, with no borrowed bits or old favorites from other acts.
