A beginner-friendly hands-on workshop teaching functional and creative visible-mending techniques through embroidery, turning tears and holes in old clothes into wearable art.
Make at Rosie is hosting a Functional Embroidery: Visible Mending Workshop on Monday, August 17, from 6 PM to 8 PM. It's a two-hour, hands-on session that takes a practical approach to mending: instead of trying to hide a tear or a hole in your clothes, you learn how to stitch right over it and turn the damage into a feature. The idea is to transform a piece of clothing you'd otherwise toss into a unique piece of wearable art.
If you've never picked up a needle in your life, that's fine. The workshop is built for beginners, and you don't need any prior experience to get through it. You'll walk away with a few core stitches under your belt—the back stitch, straight stitch, lazy daisy, and French knot—which are the building blocks for most embroidery. The focus is on functional mending, so you're learning how to actually fix your gear while adding something decorative to it in the process.
One thing to keep in mind: you're asked to bring along a piece of clothing that needs repair. Whether it's a favorite pair of jeans with a hole in the knee or a shirt that's seen better days, having your own project on the table makes the whole thing more concrete. You'll be working on your own clothes throughout the session, so you'll leave with something you can actually wear again.
