Functional Embroidery: Visible Mending Workshop

Make at Rosie is hosting a Functional Embroidery: Visible Mending Workshop on Monday, July 20, from 6 PM to 8 PM. It's a beginner-friendly session, so you don't need any prior experience with a needle and thread to join in. The whole point is to bring in your own worn or torn garments—the things you'd usually toss or leave in the back of the closet—and give them new life. Instead of hiding a hole or a rip, you'll be working it into the design, turning damaged clothing into wearable art.

The workshop covers the core stitches you'll need for most mending projects: the back stitch, straight stitch, lazy daisy, French knot, satin, and buttonhole stitches. Along with those, you'll learn Sashiko, a traditional Japanese technique that combines decorative stitching with reinforcement, so your repairs actually hold up. You'll get step-by-step handouts to follow along, and there's personalized attention throughout the night to help you get the hang of each stitch. You'll leave with the confidence to keep repairing your own clothes long after the class is over.

It's an inclusive space, and the focus is as much on creating and connecting as it is on the sewing itself. If you've got a favorite shirt with a snag or a pair of jeans that's seen better days, this is a good chance to fix them up rather than replace them. The workshop runs from 6 PM to 8 PM at Make at Rosie, the community makerspace at 8711 Burnet Road B30 in Austin. Pricing depends on your membership level: $19 for Makers, $25 for Creators, and $31 for Artisans.
