The Stage Austin is running Sam Shepard's Fool for Love from July 10 through August 2, with Kathleen Fletcher and Patrick Wheeler taking the lead. It's a one-act play set in a seedy motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert, where two former lovers collide and old wounds reopen, forcing love and hate to become inseparable. The company describes it as one of the most compelling dramas of the American stage: raw, funny and deeply human.
There's a bit of a history to the piece that's worth knowing if you're not familiar with Shepard's work. Fool for Love premiered as a play in San Francisco in 1983 and was made into a movie in 1985, but it didn't actually open on Broadway until 2015. It's a tight, single-act show, so you're in for one continuous stretch rather than a long night with an intermission.
As for the company putting it on, The Stage Austin is a troupe of veteran Austin performers, producers and directors who stage full seasons of professional theatre, ranging from American classics and Shakespeare to original works. They're currently in the middle of turning a former Chinese buffet restaurant into a dedicated theatre space, a project they're doing with the support of the Bennett Raccah Charitable Fund.
