A day of pollinator-themed activities including foraging, tasting, a parade and habitat learning, part of the Roots & Wings Festival.
Flight of the Pollinators is happening at the Austin Nature & Science Center on Saturday, October 17, from 10 AM to 2 PM. It's one of the events that make up the city's Roots & Wings Festival, a nature-based celebration that brings the center together with a handful of special guests for a day of fun, facts, and a bit of whimsy. The whole thing is open to all ages, so it's as much for kids as it is for adults.
The day is built around pollinators, and there's a good amount to actually do. You're invited to dress up as your favorite pollinator and join a Pollinator Parade, and you can 'forage' for nectar and taste different honeys. There are scavenger hunts and storytime for the younger crowd, and throughout the morning and early afternoon, you'll find interactive ways to learn how to keep the local habitat healthy. They're also handing out tree and pollinator garden starter kits while supplies last, so if you've been wanting to plant something pollinator-friendly in your own yard, this is a good time to pick up the basics.

Beyond the activities, there's a focus on the local landscape. You'll learn about the tree species that provide food, shelter, and shade for Austinites, and the day is designed to give you a better sense of how those trees and the pollinators that depend on them fit into the city's ecosystem. It's a nature day in the middle of the city, and the center is at 2389 Stratford Dr. in Austin. Admission is free, and it runs from 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, October 17.
