Community celebration with local food, art, games, and a solar oven cooking competition at Festival Beach Food Forest.
Fruitful Commons and Festival Beach Food Forest are hosting a Fall Equinox Celebration & Solar Cookout on Sunday, September 20, at the Festival Beach Food Forest & RBJ Residences (1320 Art Dilly Dr., Austin, TX 78702). The day is built around passive solar oven cooking, with a cook-off, a judges' panel, and an expert panel on the subject. Luther Krueger of the Solar Cooking Museum joins Sharon Clausson, Roger Haines, and Jim LaJoie for that discussion. The whole thing doubles as a showcase of community-led food and climate resilience solutions, and the vision plan for the Farah Rivera-Ortiz Cocina de la Cosecha (Harvest Kitchen) will be on display.
Beyond the solar cooking, there's a community meal with a nacho and taco salad bar, plus art, music, games, yoga, sun-shade painting, lotería, and activities for kids. The hosts, Fruitful Commons and Festival Beach Food Forest, run the site: a community food forest rooted in quirky Central Texas climate that encourages visitors to forage and harvest. They also program Sunday yoga under its pecan trees, first-Saturday plant walks, and monthly volunteer workdays. The celebration adds food, art, music, and games for all ages to that mix. The City of Austin, Austin Parks Foundation, and RBJ Senior Housing sponsor the event.

Logistics: The main event runs from 12 PM to 4 PM, with early-bird activities starting at 11 AM. You can park in the RBJ garage or on surrounding streets, and there are bike racks on the corner of Art Dilly Dr and LBJ Way. Keep in mind there are significant road closures and detours near Nash Hernandez, Waller St., and Riverside due to the I-35 highway expansion. A suggested donation of $5 to $25 is requested, but all are welcome and no one is turned away for lack of funds.
