A vibrant production of traditional Mexican folk dance by Roy Lozano's Ballet Folklórico de Texas, featuring live mariachi music and indigenous traditions.
Roy Lozano's Ballet Folklórico de Texas brings Estampas de México to the AISD Performing Arts Center on Saturday, September 19, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's their 2026 production, and the music is live, provided by Mariachi Cielo Azul. The whole thing is under the artistic direction of Jesús 'Chuy' Chacón.
Rather than a single performance, the company describes the show as a journey home. It takes you through the traditions of Nayarit, Veracruz, Sonora, Guerrero, Hidalgo, and Jalisco, with two pieces based on indigenous traditions—Concheros and El Venado. Between the choreography and the costumes, it's a good way to see and hear several different regions of Mexico on one stage in a single evening.
This isn't a one-off project for the group. Roy Lozano's Ballet Folklórico de Texas has spent over 40 years building a repertoire of both traditional and contemporary Mexican folk themes, so this production comes from a long history of that work. The project is supported in part by the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
