Escape the Box is running at the Texas State Capitol (1100 Congress), a time-travel adventure that turns the city into its game board. It's a mix of a scavenger hunt, an escape game, and a time-travel mystery, and you play it with a physical adventure kit rather than an app. The kit comes with a cryptic letter from the future, a map of the playing area, a cipher wheel, sealed envelopes with puzzles, and a Spotify playlist of Austin tunes. All the gameplay comes from a real box and a real map.
The premise is that your team is mysteriously transported through time and has to solve a string of mind-bending clues and interactive challenges to return to the present. Along the way, you'll uncover local history and public art, so it's as much about exploring the city as it is about cracking the puzzles. Each mission starts with a live hosted introduction, and once you finish, you get a 'Time Travel Degree' to show for it. Reviewers have called it 'not your average scavenger hunt.'

It's built for groups of four to ten players, aged 10 and up, so it works for a bunch of friends or a family outing. At the Texas State Capitol, there are two slots: 11 AM to 1 PM and 1 PM to 3 PM. If you're looking for something else, there's also an indoor option daily at 11 AM and 2 PM, and another in the Second Street District at 1 PM and 4 PM. Tickets are $39 per person.
