An evening of improvised comedy and melodrama weaving a new, passion-filled telenovela based on audience suggestions, with some Spanish and adult themes.
Escandalo Improvised Telenovelas brings ¡Escándalo! to the Dougherty Arts Center on Saturday, August 29, from 8 PM to 10 PM. It's an improvised comedy show that builds a full telenovela on the fly, with the plot coming from audience suggestions. The cast weaves together a brand-new story driven by star-crossed love, nail-biting intrigue and dastardly villains, and since it's all made up in the moment, no two shows ever come out the same.
If you've never seen it, the format is pretty straightforward: the performers take ideas from the crowd and spin them into a melodrama that leans into all the tropes you'd expect from a soap opera—the betrayal, the secret twins, the dramatic reveals—and then they play it all out in front of you. The primary language is English, though they pepper in some Spanish throughout. It's worth knowing that the performances may contain adult themes, adult language and prop weapons, so it's more of an adult crowd than a family outing.
