The Elias Haslanger Quintet plays Monks Jazz Club on Friday, September 4, for a live taping and listening-room concert. It's a double-bill night: doors open at 7 PM for the first show, which starts at 7:30 PM, and doors open again at 9 PM for the second show, starting at 9:30 PM.
Haslanger is a native Texan and Austin resident who's spent over 30 years as a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. His playing and writing draw comparisons to John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster, and Wayne Shorter. He studied saxophone at the University of Texas and the Manhattan School of Music, earned a Master's in Composition at Texas State University in San Marcos, and was mentored by Harvey Pittel and Dick Oatts.
He's performed, recorded, and toured with a wide range of artists: Ellis Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Christopher Cross, Charlie Hunter, Asleep at the Wheel, Alejandro Escovedo, Sheryl Crow, Grupo Fantasma, Spoon, The Four Tops, and The Temptations. As a leader, he's released seven recordings that have played on radio stations worldwide. His 2014 album LIVE at the Gallery earned 4.5 stars in Downbeat and made the list of the year's best recordings.
